Frankfurt is one of the most important financial centers of Europe and a tourist destination selected by millions who visit each year to see the great variety of attractions on offer in the city.
Landing at the Frankfurt Airport, claiming a rental car, and taking the Autobahn is the beginning of a vibrant trip through this modern European city. And there’s no better starting part than the zone known as Main-hattan with it’s enormous skyscrapers along the banks of the Main river.
There are many stunning buildings making up the dazzling and futuristic profile of the city. The Commerzbank Tower 850 feet tall, the MesseTurm 843 feet tall, the Eurotower 475 feet tall, and the Silver Tower 544 feet tall, and more are among the tallest skyscrapers in Europe.
And if what you want is to see the emblematic skyscrapers of Frankfurt, there’s no better option than paying a visit to Main Tower. This 650 feet 780 feet (including the antenna) has 56 floors (5 of which are underground) and 27 elevators that climb the building in 45 seconds at a speed of 11 miles per hour.
The Main Tower was inaugurated in January of 2000 and houses banks, and television and radio studios. On the 53rd floor there are a restaurant and tower lounge offering modern cuisine with excellent service and a grand view. The price is not so accessible, but it’s an ideal place for a special occasion or romantic dinner.
Without a doubt the biggest attraction of the tower is the open air viewpoint 200 meters in the air, which allows for an unparalleled 360 degree view of the city. Going at dusk to see the sun setting is a once in a life-time experience. The 54th floor has a covered observatory for bad weather. The entrance cost for this incredible experience is 6.5 euros.
It’s important to keep in mind that on the weekends the Main Tower view point is very busy, but Monday through Friday you can go up 5 minutes after buying your ticket. It’s a good idea to bring a jacket or coat.
To arrive by rental car to Main Tower take highway A66 and exit Miquelallee. You can also take the A5 towards Westkreuz and exit onto the A648. From there you just need to head towards Frankfurt-Innenstadt-Messe and follow indications towards the central train station (Hauptbahnhof). Once there you’ll take a left at Mainzer Lanstrasse and then a right on Junghofstrasse. Finally take a right on Nueu Schlesingergasse.
It’s highly advisable to reserve a rental car that has GPS in your language in order to enjoy the trip without worrying about reading signs or where to take exits.
The underground parking at the principal tower is not open to the public. However there are other lots nearby. For example the Parkhaus Junghofstrasse located around the corner.
