Traveling in Atlanta with a Rental Car

With 343 km2, Atlanta is the capital of Georgia, and the city with the largest population. It is located in the Southeastern part of the United States, just North of Florida. Therefore, its climate is subtropical and humid, with summer temperatures and mild winters.

Every year approximately 40 million tourists visit this city; home to major global companies like Coca Cola Company, AT&T, CNN and Delta Airlines. It is also famous for having the world's busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson, located 11 km (6 miles) from the city center, where about 90 million passengers travel through every year for local and international flights.

For those who haved arrived to Atlanta and are already inside their rental car, ready to tour the city, there is a lot to see and discover.

Centennial Olympic Park, built to host the 1996 Olympics, the stadium offers the possibility to visit the famous Fountain of Rings, as well as enjoy outdoor music concerts. Also, you can visit the Georgia Aquarium; tour The World of Coca Cola to learn about the company’s history; go to The Atlanta Children's Museum, offering activities for kids; and tour the CNN studios.

Those who are interested in wildlife and nature, can visit The Atlanta Zoo, which is located near the city center, in the historic Grant Park, which houses over 800 animals of 200 different species. You can also shop around Atlanta Botanical Garden www.atlantabotanicalgarden.org, which features a Children's Garden, a greenhouse, The Dorothy Chapman Fuqua, which houses exotic plants; as well as The Fuqua Orchid Center, which showcases endangered species from around the world.

Part of Martin Luther King’s story also takes place in Atlanta. His birthplace, located in the Sweet Auburn district, is open to tourists all year round; just like the mausoleum where his remains are buried, and The Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he preached this famous defense for Civil Rights in the United States.

And for those who love art, you can visit the High Museum of Art, one of the largest museums in the South of the United States, offering a permanent exhibition of more than 14,000 pieces of American decorative art from the 19th and 20th centuries, major European pieces, and African art from other collections.

After a stroll around town, you can start heading back in your rental car, but not before doing some boutique shopping at The Lenox Square Mall, located in Buckhead; or shopping with exclusive brands in the Phipps Plaza, on Peachtree Street. Or maybe shop around the Underground, and take home a souvenir from the gift shop, something special to wear, or some artwork.

Getting around in Atlanta is not easy, not only because the traffic on the main highways (I-85, I-75, I-285 or I-20) tends to be high, but also because many streets have the same name. Therefore the best way to move around town freely and safely is to rent a car with a GPS in your language.
