blogInfo If you get into your rental car, and drive around Florida, you will soon see the state offers some scenery that appears to be from out of a movie, not to be missed. An example of this is Coral Gables, a neighborhood located south of Miami, surrounded by mansions designed with Meditarranean architecture, decorated with incredible gardens and spotlessly clean and manicured front lawns. Coral Gables was founded by George Merrick, an American entrepreneur who, in 1925, moved into a mansion in the area, and had an idea to create a city inspired by architectural lines of the Mediterranean. For this reason, in Coral Gables, the predominant construction of the houses is done in colonial style, mainly Spanish. Later on, the area was chosen as a place of residence for Cuban upper-class families who migrated there in 1959, after the triumph of Castro's revolution in Cuba.

Coral Gables is an ideal place to go with a rental car, allowing you to move around very easily through the large avenues, and visit the most emblematic places of the neighborhood walk. Some of them are:

Miracle Mile

This commercial area in Coral Gables, located between Avenues 37 and 42 of Coral Way, offers visitors the chance to shop at trendy boutiques in the area, and enjoy art galleries, great bookstores, and even a theater. Miracle Mile is easily accessible and can be explored on foot. You can also find more than 60 restaurants and outdoor cafes there.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

A tropical garden of 33 hectares (83 acres) founded in 1938, with collections of tropical plants and exotic flowers. The garden also houses an amazing butterfly garden, which gives a special and magical touch to the atmosphere.

Venetian Pool

Built in 1923, The Venetian Pool is an historic pool full of waterfalls and caves. This pool of 3.1 million liters (820,000 gallons) is surrounded by original coral stones and was created so that locals could swim and interact with each other. In the past, often when the pool was emptied, orchestral concerts were held inside. The place has a snack bar and also picnic areas with sand or grass. An ideal place to go on walks with the kids.

Biltmore Hotel

In 1926 the founder of Coral Gables opened The Biltmore. A hotel built in a Spanish-Renaissance style, including a tower of 18 meters, which mimics the bell tower of the Giralda de Seville. Famous figures like Al Capone, Judy Garland, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Tarzan of those years, Johnny Weissmuller, who trained in the hotel pool, all have stayed in this luxury hotel. Also, films with Silvester Stallone and Sharon Stone have been shot in The Biltmore.

Coral Gables Merrick House and Gardens

For those still wanting more, hop back into your rental car and end your travels by visiting the home of George E. Merrick, the founder of Coral Gables. As a museum, the house offers the possibility to enter the world of this visionary entrepreneur, through photos, furniture and personal treasures.
